JCFC Partners With Farmigo!

Starting this week, the Jersey City Food Co-Op is switching our store for most items to Farmigo, an online farmers’ market that connects workplaces, schools, apartment complexes and community centers directly to local farms, in order to continue to bring you the fresh produce, meat, eggs, seafood, and other artisanal food products that you love. Farmigo delivers your food to us pre-sorted and ready to go! As a member, you’ll have access to the store.

We’ve heard your feedback and we are excited to announce that our new partnership with Farmigo will address many of them.

You’ve told us that you want a better shopping experience. The Farmigo website offers beautiful pictures of the products and an intuitive interface. No more separate screens for suppliers!

You’ve told us that you want more consistent store hours. We are now open for ordering fresh food every weekend on Saturday and Sunday!

You’ve told us you’re tired of paying for goods only to have them not show up. With Farmigo, your credit card does not get charged until your order has been finalized with Farmigo.

So, how does it work?

You can log on and add food to your cart throughout the week. Check often, as new items are added constantly! Make sure you have all your items ordered by midnight Sunday, and your items will arrive pre-sorted at St. Paul’s church (440 Hoboken Avenue, Jersey City, NJ near Journal Square) on the following Wednesday. It’s that simple. You pay with a credit card when you check out, but your card is not charged until the order is finalized, so you’re only paying for what you’re getting.

And for those who love the wonderful products that come on Tuesday, don’t fret! We’re continuing to offer products from Frontier, our distributor that offers things like eco-friendly cleaning supplies, spices, oils and other non-food goods. That ordering process will remain the same. You’ll have from Thursday evening until the following Tuesday at midnight to order those products, and they’ll be delivered the following week. Reminder: Board Vacancies

JCFC is currently looking for member-owners to fill trustee vacancies.

While no single characteristic defines an ideal member of the board, the Co-op is seeking nominees who are—through a commitment to our Mission and Values—willing to take on board responsibilities (as outlined in the board contract) and help grow our Co-op!

Some useful experience, education, or skills might include prior work on a volunteer board; financial, business, or legal background management, supervisory, or organizational skills; negotiation, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills; collective/cooperative experience.

Applications are due by December 20th, to be voted on at the January General Meeting. The Governance Committee will be nominating any member-owner who is interested and fulfills the basic requirements so send your application (completed Form A) over!

Eat Local, Read Local!: The next meeting of the JCFC Book Club is on November 21st

13572938Come join us at the Warehouse Cafe (140 Bay Street in the Powerhouse Arts District in Downtown Jersey City) on Thursday, November 21, as we discuss, Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System by Raj Patel. Just in time for Thanksgiving!

“It is difficult to pick up a newspaper without reading about increasing food crises in much of the world or the epidemic of obesity in America. Raj Patel argues that both are symptoms of the corporate food monopoly. From seed to store to plate, Stuffed and Starved explains the steps to regain control of the global food economy, stop the exploitation of farmers and consumers, and rebalance global sustenance.”

Interested in your local food system, health, and some of the food issues raised by Patel in his book? Don’t have time to read it? Join us anyway for what should be great discussion.

Plus we’ll swap recipes on appropriately stuffed things–cabbage, peppers, tomatoes, etc! So bring your favorite recipe along.
