what is a co-op?
First set in 1844 by the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers, these principles form the core philosophy of cooperatives around the world:
- • Open, voluntary membership
- • Democratic governance
- • Limited return on equity
- • Surplus that belongs to the membership
- • Education of members and the public in cooperative principles
- • Collaborative support among cooperatives
- • Concern for our community
What is a food co-op?
A food co-op is a grocery store organized as a cooperative. Food cooperatives are usually consumers’ cooperatives and are owned by their members. Food cooperatives typically offer natural and organic foods. Since decisions about how to run the cooperative are decided by the members democratically and not influenced by outside shareholders, cooperatives often exhibit a higher degree of social responsibility than their corporate counterparts.
